What is Bazi?

Bazi (八字), also known as the Four Pillars of Destiny (四柱命理), is a Chinese metaphysical system with over 1,000 years of history. The name literally means "eight characters," referring to the eight Chinese characters derived from your birth time — two characters (a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch) for each of the four pillars: Year, Month, Day, and Hour. Each pillar represents a different aspect of your life, and together they form a complete energetic blueprint.

The Four Pillars

Year Pillar (年柱): Represents your ancestry, family background, and the broader generational context. Month Pillar (月柱): Governs your career, parents, and your relationship to authority and work. Day Pillar (日柱): The most important pillar — your Day Master represents your core self, personality, and marriage. The Earthly Branch of this pillar is your spouse element. Hour Pillar (时柱): Reflects your children, creative output, inner thoughts, and later years of life.

Bazi vs. Western Astrology

While Western astrology is based on planetary positions at birth, Bazi is based on time elements — dividing birth time into the Sexagenary Cycle (60 combinations of stems and branches). Bazi uses 2-hour blocks (12 shichen per day), follows a lunisolar calendar anchored to 24 solar terms, and analyzes relationships between the Five Elements rather than planetary influences.
