How to Read Your Chart

A step-by-step beginner's guide to interpreting your Bazi

Step 1: Find Your Day Master

Look at your Day Pillar (third column in the Bazi table). The top character — the Heavenly Stem — is your Day Master. This represents you: your core essence, personality, and energy type. It belongs to one of the Five Elements (Wood/Fire/Earth/Metal/Water) and has a yin or yang polarity. For example, if your Day Stem is 甲 (Jia), you are a yang Wood person — flexible, growth-oriented, and idealistic.

Step 2: Assess Element Balance

Count how many times each of the Five Elements appears across all eight characters (both stems and branches, including hidden stems). Is your Day Master's element strong (appears 3+ times) or weak (appears only 1-2 times)? A strong Day Master thrives on being controlled by other elements — some challenge is healthy. A weak Day Master needs nourishment — look for elements that generate yours. The app's Five Elements chart shows this balance visually.

Step 3: Examine Structure & Special Formations

Look for notable patterns across your chart: Are multiple pillars identical or complementary? (e.g., three Tigers in a row). Do you have a clash between pillars? (e.g., Year Branch 子 vs Day Branch 午). Are there combinations creating new elements? (e.g., 寅 + 午 + 戌 creates a Fire frame). Does your Day Branch clash with the Month or Year Branch? These structural features often override simple element counting in importance.

Step 4: Identify Your Dominant Ten Gods

Which Ten Gods appear most frequently in your chart? A chart heavy in Output stars suggests a creative, expressive personality. A chart rich in Wealth stars indicates strong money and resource awareness. The Ten Gods section of your Bazi result page shows this at a glance — look for the gods that appear multiple times across all four pillars.

Limitations & Mindset

Bazi is a tool for self-awareness, not fatalistic prediction. Your chart shows tendencies, not certainties — free will and effort always matter. The same chart can manifest differently based on education, environment, culture, and personal choices. A challenging chart is not a life sentence — it often produces the most remarkable growth. Use Bazi as a compass, not a cage. It points direction; you choose how to walk the path.
