What Are the Five Elements?

The Five Elements (五行 — Wu Xing) are not literal substances but phases of transformation — five fundamental ways that energy (Qi) manifests and interacts. They are Wood (木), Fire (火), Earth (土), Metal (金), and Water (水). Each element has associated qualities, directions, seasons, organs, colors, and emotions. In Bazi, your Day Master belongs to one of these five elements, which forms the cornerstone of your chart analysis.

The Five Elements in Detail

Wood (木): Growth, expansion, spring, east, green, liver. Creativity, flexibility, benevolence. Fire (火): Heat, passion, summer, south, red, heart. Enthusiasm, charisma, expression. Earth (土): Stability, nurturing, late summer, center, yellow, spleen. Reliability, groundedness, support. Metal (金): Structure, contraction, autumn, west, white, lungs. Discipline, righteousness, precision. Water (水): Flow, wisdom, winter, north, dark/blue, kidneys. Intelligence, adaptability, introspection.

The Generating Cycle (相生)

Elements support each other in a nourishing cycle: Wood feeds Fire (wood burns), Fire creates Earth (ash), Earth bears Metal (ores form in earth), Metal carries Water (condensation on metal surfaces), Water nourishes Wood (trees drink water). This cycle is called the "Sheng" or generating cycle — when you see these relationships in a chart, they indicate support, flow, and positive development.

The Overcoming Cycle (相克)

Elements also control each other in a balancing cycle: Wood parts Earth (roots break soil), Earth absorbs Water (dams contain water), Water extinguishes Fire, Fire melts Metal, Metal cuts Wood. This is called the "Ke" or overcoming cycle. In a chart, these relationships can indicate challenges or the need to exert control — but they are not inherently negative. Sometimes too much of one element needs to be "ke'd" back into balance.

Elements in Your Chart

Your Day Master's element determines which other elements are "favorable" (supportive) or "unfavorable" (depleting). A strong Day Master benefits from being controlled (ke); a weak Day Master needs support (sheng). The art of Bazi reading is assessing this balance and understanding how the elements in your chart, luck cycles, and current year interact.
